Safer Drivers Course for Trainers

This training is for the delivery of the Safer Drivers Course.  

Only facilitators and coaches engaged by an accredited provider of the NSW Safer Drivers Course are eligible to enroll.

To be eligible to attend the course

  • You must be engaged by an Accredited Provider of the NSW Safer Drivers Course for Learner Drivers
  • Payment for the course must be made prior to commencing the course
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110) or later for facilitators
  • Minimum 12 months' experience in facilitation
  • Current Driving Instructor Licence (not restricted) for coaches
  • Minimum 12 months' experience in driving instruction
  • Completed Working with Children Check
Note: Ascent Training Services P/L is an RTO (No. 88096). However, the NSW Safer Drivers Course facilitator and coach training courses are NOT a nationally accredited VET course, and completion of the course does not result in receipt of a nationally recognised qualification.

Please also note that the on-road component of this course is delivered on our behalf by Fifth Gear Motoring, under our supervision.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have a Certificate IV in Transport and Logistics (TLI41210) can I facilitate Module 1?

No, the TfNSW requirements are that you have completed Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or an Australian degree or diploma in education, or its equivalent certified by an Australian institution if awarded overseas, with teaching experience/employment.

You may be able to demonstrate Recognised Prior Learning and complete the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110) quicker.  You should discuss this with the Institution of your choice when investigating


I have completed the Facilitator/Coach Training and lost my certificate?

We can email you a copy free of charge or post a printed copy for a $10 charge.  Please send your details via the Contact Us General Enquires page or email  admin@ascenttrainingservices.com.au .  Please allow 2 days to process the request.


What defines 12 months' experience?

Facilitators- RMS requires demonstrated minimum twelve-month experience in facilitation or tertiary teaching experience/ employment.  This would be defined as any previous employment where you have regularly over at least 12-month period facilitated a group learner outcome. 

Coach - RMS requires demonstrated minimum twelve-month experience as a licensed driving instructor or be a current Safer Drivers Course coach.  You must have had an instructors licence for minimum of 12 months and been employed or working as an instructor for a minimum of 12 months.


I don't currently have enough experience; can I complete the Training before I have the 12 months' experience?

No, you must have 12 months' experience before enrolling in the Facilitator or Coach Training.


If I have 12 months' experience as a Driving Instructor can that count towards experience for Facilitator Training?

No as described above you must have 12 months' experience in Facilitation


How do I make a suggestion about the Safer Drivers Course curriculum?

If you or one of your trainers wish to make suggestions to the curriculum, you must prepare an update proposal and send it to the Safer Drivers Course Administrator. This must include a description of the changes you recommend and the reasoning behind them. Please email the proposal to  saferdriverscourse@rms.nsw.gov.au .
